Cure Alls
Cure Alls
There are several other products that American Sale carries that can aid you in your quest for a crystal clear pool. However, you do not need to use every product listed. Only use a product if deemed necessary.
Remember to always add the chemicals to water, and never water to the chemicals. Store all chemicals in a dry place, away from children and pets.
All the chemicals can be divided into three main categories, weekly treatments, new water treatments and problem treatments.
In addition to the description of products, there is also a treatment amount. Please follow the proper amount dependent on your pool size.
Algaecides
There are about 40 to 50 different kinds of algae that can survive in a pool environment. The most effective way to get rid of algae is to poison it. By doing this, the poison diffuses into the cell wall
of algae and burns up the insides that make it function. It should be no surprise then that the most effective algaecide is chlorine. Other than chlorine, there are other algaecides that can help in your battle to a clearer pool. Use an algaecide on a weekly basis to prevent the dreaded green monster from ever rearing its ugly head.
Copper Algaecides
Copper algaecides perform a bit differently. Copper algaecide interferes with algae’s ability to feed and breathe. Without those functions, algae can not survive. Before using a copper-based algaecide, make sure to bring in a water sample to American Sale to have the copper level of your pool water tested. If you have any algae problems, the copper will attack the algae, and not stain your liner (as long as you don’t exceed .6ppm of copper). Without algae present, it can cause staining, so use very small maintenance amounts. Use 10 oz. of Malibu’s copper algaecide per 10,000 gallons for initial dose. If algae is still present, you must follow treatment within 48 hours with same dosage. Use 5 oz. per 10,000 gal. for maintenance once a week. When using Malibu’s Concentrated Algaecide, initial dose should be 4 oz. per 10,000 gal. Maintain this amount by using 2 oz. every 2 weeks.
! Caution: Using a copper-based algaecide can cause staining of skin, hair, pool and
pool liner.
Shock and Swim
Shock and Swim is a chlorine free shock that is pH neutral. It behaves like other shocks, but does not affect any of your testing levels. Since this product is chlorine free, you won’t have to worry about it bleaching your clothes or liner, and it won’t irritate your skin or eyes like chlorine can. Shock and Swim can also be used to remove chloramines from your water. It is compatible with chlorine, Proteam Supreme, and the Frog Cycler. Best yet, you can swim in 15 minutes after application. For best results, broadcast 1 pound per 10,000 gallons over the pool’s surface and run your filter. You can resume swimming in 15 minutes. Shock at least once every two weeks, or after a heavy rainstorm.
Poly Magic Microfloc
Poly Magic Microfloc is a liquid and acts as a coagulant. It surrounds and smothers microscopic particles (beginning stages of algae) in your water that pass right through your filter. It takes these small particles and joins them together to form a larger structure. Once these particles join together, your filter can effectively remove them from your pool. Poly Magic Microfloc not only improves your water clarity, but can also prevent algae from occurring. When using Microfloc, you will never have to use an algaecide because removing microscopic algae life is more efficient than killing algae after it has invaded your pool. It is easier to spend time preventing a problem than correcting one. For initial treatment, add 14 oz. per 10,000 gallons directly into the pool water. Run filter. For maintaining your pool weekly, add 4 oz. per 10,000 gallons of pool water. Run filter.
Power Enzyme
Power Enzyme eliminates oils, lotions, and any organic waste in the pool water. It breaks these materials down into their most basic form, and then releases them as a natural gas. Power Enzyme also keeps filters clean longer, particularly an element filter. It will break down matter that is trapped between folds of your element. This will not only keep it clean but also allow it to last longer. Add 1 ounce of Power Enzyme per 2,500 gallons of water. Run your filter, and refrain from using before or after chlorinating your pool. (Chlorine level should read below 3 ppm before using this product). You should maintain this weekly.
Metal Magic
Metal Magic helps lower the calcium hardness level. Metal Magic removes metals from the water that can potentially cause stains and interfere with how effective your sanitizer will perform. It also helps remove scaling or existing stains (when using to remove scales or stains, accompany with a brushing). First have your water tested for metals present. Adjust pH of water to 7.5 to 7.8 for the treatment to be more effective. If you have the Frog System, shut it off before treatment. If metals are present, add 1 quart of Metal Magic per 10,000 gallons. After application, run filter for 24 hours. (Treatment should only take place if water is above 60 degrees F)
Weekly Treat
Weekly Treat is exactly what it says, a
weekly treatment
for Proteam Supreme. Using Proteam Supreme is a one-time application per season. However, overtime you will add water to your pool that you have lost through backwashing, splashing out, or evaporation. The water being added is not treated. Weekly Treat maintains your desired level of Proteam Supreme (30 to 50 ppm), by treating the water you are adding back into your pool. To maintain proper levels of Supreme, broadcast 4 oz. or one capful per 10,000 gallons into your pool water. Repeat this application any time water is added.
UV Shield
UV Shield is a another name for cyanuric acid. As explained before, this product will protect your chorine level from being affected by the sun’s ultraviolet rays. Add this product through the skimmer, 1 lb. per 3,000 gallons. Run your filter.
PhosFree
Phosphates can invade your swimming pool from fertilizers, cleaners, rainwater, fill water and body fluids. These phosphates can build-up in your pool water, providing a necessary food source for algae. Algae can be treated with chemicals like algaecides or other sanitizing products. PhosFree is a regular maintenance program to continually remove phosphates as they enter the water. The program works in conjunction with the enzyme-based Pool Perfect; combining the benefits of both products into an easy maintenance program for swimming pool owners. While the PHOSfree removes the phosphates, the natural enzymes gently biodegrade organic material in the pool water.
Mustard and Black Magic
Mustard and Black algae is a form of algae that needs to be treated differently. This type of algae has a protective coating that makes it resistant to chlorine. So by adding chlorine alone, you will lose the battle. Mustard or black algae is airborne, and that is how it’s introduced to your pool water. It does not lessen the water quality, but
stains
your liner. Black algae looks like small black dots that accumulate together. Mustard algae is usually yellow or yellowish brown in color, but it can also be red, green, or even pink at times. This product will help to eliminate the stain on your lining, but not without putting some muscle into it. Mustard and black algae are very persistent and difficult to get rid of. Brushing the lining is a must for best results. Mustard and Black Magic come in two package sizes, 6 oz. and 1 lb. containers. Use 4 oz. per 10,000 gallons, and broadcast throughout surface of pool. Immediately oxidize the pool, by using 3 lb. of Shock and Swim or 3 lb. of a chlorine oxidizer. Follow this by brushing the floors and wall of the pool. Run the filter overnight. For severe cases, you may have to follow these steps several times. (When using Shock and Swim, you can resume swimming within 1 hour, but must wait until chlorine residual falls to 5 ppm when using a chlorine oxidizer). There is a mold that looks similar to black algae. This mold or bacteria embeds itself into the lining of your pool, and is usually found at the bottom. You will notice that if you brush it, it seems to disappear, but then reappears. This mold is found in rich soils, and comes up through sand and into the lining of your pool. Unfortunately, the only way to treat this problem is to treat the ground. Contact someone at American Sale for more details if you encounter a similar problem.
Tile and Vinyl Cleaner
Tile and Vinyl Cleaner will help keep your liner looking brand new. It is non-abrasive liquid, and will help remove scaling, scum, suntan oils, and calcium deposits from your pool wall. This will save you money by prolonging the expense of getting a new liner! Open the flip top spout and spray the vinyl cleaner on a non-abrasive sponge or cloth. Wipe the surface and then rinse thoroughly.
Filter Magic
Filter Magic Cleaner will aid in removing oils, scale, and grime from Sand, DE, and Element Filters. Filter Magic can be used either in a backwash setting, or if you want to deep soak.
Using Filter Magic:
Sand
Turn off all chemical feeders or chlorinators. Place filter in backwash position. Pour 6 oz. of Filter Magic into the skimmer while backwashing. Proceed to backwash until water clears up. Continue normal operations.
Element
Remove Element from filter tank. Squirt filter with Filter Magic cleaner from top to bottom. Let stand for 5 to 10 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with a hose, and place back into filter tank. Continue normal operations.
DE
Remove grids or fingers from inside of filter tank. Squirt grids with Filter Magic cleaner from top to bottom. Let stand for 5 to 10 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with a hose, and place grids/fingers back into filter tank. Continue normal operations.
Label each one of your products in the beginning with the letters W, N, & P to help you distinguish when to use one product from the next. Once you feel comfortable with the products, you can stop labeling them.
