Spa Filters

Dedicated Filtration
Having dedicated filtration in your spa is a huge help because it gives you the best filtration and saves you money. To have dedicated filtration requires that you have a circulation pump in your spa. A circulation pump is a small motor that has one job, to circulate the water. It does not supply water to the jets at all.
This little pump runs 24 hours a day and it does three things for you:
  • Circulates the water
You can’t have the water still and stagnant at all times when the spa is not in use. Your other option is to have your jet motors kick on to circulate the water in the spa. A circulation pump uses a fraction of the energy that a jet motor uses. So it ends up saving you money on your electric bill.
  • Keeps the water heated
Another benefit of a circulation pump is keep the water heated at the temperature you want it at, at all times. If you were without a circulation pump you would need to rely on your jet pump to kick on to push the water through your heater to keep it at the temperature you want it at. This saves you money because the circulation pump will cost much less money to run than your big jet pumps.
  • 24 hours of filtration
Lastly a circulation pump gives you 24 hours of filtration. This is where the dedicated filtration comes into play. Your circulation pump only pulls from one of your filters. Since the pump is always running and the water has to pass through that dedicated filter before it can go anywhere else, it is always cleaning your spa.

Styles of filters

There is one style of filter that most spa manufacturer's use, an element filter that has a pleated media. The media is spun bonded polyester. The water passes through the media and collects dirt, debris, and oils on the surface area of the media. The more pleats and square footage in the filter the more effective the filter is in cleaning the water. To take care of this element filter you must hose down the filter a minimum of once a month. This is to ensure that the spa has the proper flow of water to allow the equipment in the spa to run smoothly. If the filter gets too clogged then the equipment will run dry and burn up. This type of filter lasts about 18 to 24 months if properly taken care of.
Artesian Spas has come out with a filter that allows you to only spend 3 minutes in your spas filter compartment a year. This filter is called a micron filter. The micron filter collects particles the size of 2 micron. That is a considerable upgrade compared to the element filter. Lower density fibers are used on the surface of the filter with higher density fibers nearer the center. This increases the dirt-holding capacity of the filter cartridge, as well as greatly increasing the efficiency of the filter and the clarity of the water. The micron filter design improves water circulation while reducing the use of chemicals in your spa, and it has proven to be much more efficient and effective than the standard pleated cartridge filter.
What also makes this filter desirable is the fact that it never has to be cleaned. It is a disposable filter. So you only have to worry about your filters 3 times a year. Artesian has also designed this filter with a cap that snaps onto the top of the filter. The purpose of the cap is to incorporate a Nature2 silver ion purifier that can screw onto the bottom of the cap. This makes things easy because you just replace everything at once. The filter and the Nature2 both get replaced every 4 months. The filter with the integrated cap is designated for your circulation pump so the Nature2 cartridge is helping purify the water 24 hours a day.
Hot Spring Spas offers a filter that last twice as long as an element filter and can also hold twice as much dirt which means less work for you. Most of the Hot Spring spas come with their exclusive Tri-X filter. The Tri-X filter is the same size in height and diameter as the element filter they have used for the 10 plus years before the Tri-X filter was invented. So the question is if they are the same size how is it that the Tri-X filter can hold twice the amount of dirt than the traditional element filter. Stated earlier the element filter uses the surface area of the media to filter the dirt. The Tri-X filter not only uses the surface area of the media it also uses the depth of the media. The Tri-X filter uses a completely different type of media than the traditional element filter. Think of it like trying to wipe up a spill with a paper towel vs. a sponge. The paper towel can pick up some of the spill, but you may need to get more towels to do the job right. A sponge will wipe up the entire spill because it has more depth to hold more of the spill. One of the best things about the Tri-X filter is that it is dishwasher safe. Run the filter through the rinse cycle of a dishwasher without soap.
