When people think about careers, they often picture a straight path. One job leading directly to the next. In reality, many successful careers are built through curiosity, persistence, and a willingness to embrace new opportunities.
For Chris, Director of Sales at American Sale, that journey began over a decade ago when he joined the company as a part-time Sales Associate in September 2014.
Today, Chris helps lead sales strategy and team development across the organization, but his path to leadership wasn't something he envisioned when he first started.
Discovering a Career, Not Just a Job
Like many people entering retail, Chris initially viewed the position as temporary.
"For the first couple of years at American Sale, I thought of this as not a 'real job' because it was in retail," he explains.
That perspective changed after hearing a story from a respected industry trainer who shared how helping customers create enjoyable experiences for their families brought him more fulfillment than a traditional professional career.
The message resonated.
"It changed my entire mindset about what I do," Chris says. "I love going to work every day with the goal of helping families, coworkers, and friends find products that make their homes more fun."
Growth Through Continuous Learning
One theme has remained constant throughout Chris's career: a commitment to learning.
From training opportunities and industry education to learning from top performers, Chris has consistently sought ways to improve his skills and knowledge.
"From day one, I've had a desire to learn more and improve my skills," he says. "I've always believed that the day you think you know everything is the day you should leave the industry."
That mindset helped fuel significant professional success, including nearly $3 million in sales during 2020. His willingness to learn, adapt, and take on new challenges ultimately led him through multiple leadership roles and into his current position as Director of Sales.
Leadership Through Service
Chris's leadership philosophy was shaped long before he stepped into management.
He credits his father, who spent years leading teams in the construction industry, with teaching him one of the most important lessons about leadership: leaders exist to serve their people.
"We need results from our teams, but if we're not there to provide help, security, and opportunities for growth, we won't get the best from them," Chris explains.
That philosophy continues to guide his approach today as he works to support team members, develop future leaders, and create opportunities for growth across the organization.
Why Employees Stay
When asked what has kept him at American Sale for more than a decade, Chris points to the company's culture and opportunities.
"American Sale treats their employees incredibly well, has provided ample opportunities for success, and I truly enjoy my work," he says.
He also appreciates the freedom employees have to take ownership of their careers.
"You can truly own your own business operating within American Sale's framework. You can set your own expectations, goals, and opportunities based on how hard you're willing to work for them."
Advice for New Team Members
For anyone starting an entry-level position, Chris's advice is simple: immerse yourself in learning.
"Take every opportunity possible to learn," he says. "Shadow coworkers, learn the products, attend trainings, visit other locations, and understand the customer experience. The more effort you put in early, the greater the long-term rewards."
He believes some of the most important skills for success are flexibility, authenticity, self-motivation, and a willingness to connect with new people.
